Since we're leaving today for a week at the lake I have doing a whole

bunch of nothing on my mind. Of course I need to do nothing and keep

three kids amused at the same time, which presents problems. I'm sure

this shows my age, but the first thing I think of is board games. On a

My Three Favorite Board Games

#1. Backgammon. I've been playing since I was a little kid and I still

haven't improved much. I love it in spite of myself. Logic and

strategy games really appeal to me, even though I can be spotty on

both. This was my dad's favorite game and he taught me to play pretty

early. He had been playing since he was a kid and was an excellent

player. He died suddenly a few years ago after a lifetime of us

struggling to connect and the sight of a backgammon board always makes

me think of him in a very nice way. This besides the fact that in my

entire life I never beat him. Not once.

#2. Apples to Apples. This is a relatively new game on the market, and

it is absolutly fab. If you've never played it you owe it to yourself

response to a subject card. You can play it funny or straight, but

played with a group of people ranging from 7 to 50 and everyone had a

blast. As a matter of fact my set keeps getting lent out because

everyone who plays it wants to borrow it. Too. Much. Fun.

#3. Monopoly. If I had a dollar for every hour of my misspent

childhood I spent huddled over a Monopoly game...I could buy three

hotels on Boardwalk. My best friends and I would have these marathon

sessions that only ended when one of us got caught embezzling money

from the bank in a fit of financial despair. To this day I can tell

you (by heart) the purchase price and rental charge on every single

property. My kids didn't believe me and insisted on testing me on it.

Let's just say they're believers now. As an adult I haven't played as

much. Who needs a board game to go around and around in circles never

having enough money? Really. For quite a while there it was a real

drag. Lately though we've been getting back into it. It's fun to play

with my kids and whip their butts. And I always know when someone is

Last Sunday, after some meaningless errands, I thought to get that

backgammon board out of the attic. Take that as a bad sign that a

just-purchased backgammon board was already in the attic, less than a

week after being brought home. It hadn't been opened.

A film version correctly applying foreshadowing would have me cleaning

out the attic days before showing me at the thrift store. While

cleaning the attic I would awkwardly say out-loud to myself how much

That Sunday, before heading to the attic, I sat on the couch to eat an

apple. And that is when The Duchess of Doom entered my life. That is

when my life changed.

Without peer, Allison Fisher is the greatest female billiards player

of all time. I don't trivialize the word "greatest" like most people

do. I also prefer not to throw around the word "amazing" if there is

any doubt. None lingers when I speak of Allison Fisher. She's the

greatest amazing!

The TV was on ESPN for some reason. Maybe I was looking for more

skinny on that punkass bitch Roger Clemens. What I found was the 2007

Women's Professional Billiards Association US Open finals matching

On Allison: Her ferocity, intensity and mastery of this sport appeals

to me on many levels. I grew up with a pool table in the basement of

my home. I would linger around it when my brothers played.

Occasionally I'd get a game in with friends or self. My mom would play

while I was at school. It always seem like a burden to have this

hulking table in the middle of a small basement. More than hosting

tense, competitive games of 9 ball it more frequently housed clothes

that needed folding, photographs that needed sorting or my collection

of Birthday Party and Husker Du LPs. It largely stood for unfulfilled

promise. If I wasn't so lazy, easily-distracted or prone to not

wanting to be at the house at all, I could develop a really strong

game. I could become an intimidating pool force. I didn't. Allison

speaks to that unfulfilled promise.

Her mastery of billiards appeals to my once-closeted

obsessive-compulsive disorder. I am troubled by clutter. An absence of

order in a space can easily drive me out of the room. A wall hanging

ticked left or right gets me out of my chair. Straight, clean lines

bring comfort and calm, hence my affection for Agnes Martin and Carl

Andre (who, you may not know, was charged with and then acquitted of

murdering his wife). Sloppy, recalcitrant curves have no place in

billiards. Allison Fisher is the warden to whom angles and lines

acquiesce. Watching her work relaxes me. Her play lulls me into a

place where I feel convinced that yes indeed the world can conform to

my rigid expectations, despite that fact that everyone wrongly thinks

they are absurd and completely unattainable.

It has been months, probably since lying on a Mexican beach, that I

felt so relaxed as during those few hours watching the wizardry of The

Duchess of Doom* (as she's known) carve up the other Fisher with

astonishing precision. You could almost see the calculations in her

head. The next three shots already scripted as she calibrated the cue.

Back to skool

It's been an interesting week. Quite apart from sitting through a 3

day conference on Media censorship in Latin America with the heads of

the most important Human Rights NGOs in each country all interjecting

their personal experiences and possible solutions on the matter (2

prime specimens are pictured above), I have also been successfully

burning the candle at the other end. The world has become a little bit

smaller since we last met with my meeting someone who knows my cousin

(Arabella) and lives 2 doors down from her in Richmond, and my french

friend (Aurelie) bumping into an Algerian guy here who she'd sat next

to when learning Spanish in paris before coming out here. My Spanish

has come on leaps and bounds thanks to the amount of desperate men in

this city. It's fantastically easy meeting people if you're female.

It's not quite so fantastically easy to get rid of them. I am

practically bilingual when we get onto the conversation of "the

existence of platonic relationships" though am not sure I choose the

best context to talk about it last night when I discovered my hosts

had taken me to a stripclub/brothel. I have become used to the 9pm nap

that is an essential for bodily survival in this city, and am

rejoicing about finding the nicest pair of boots you'll ever see. They

are cooler than me. I am keeping a beady eye on them to make sure they

don't get too cocky. I gave in to Western luxury and watched V for

vendetta a box of popcorn bigger than a television and realised that

it had failed to notice that anyone not from England has no idea who

Guyfalkes actually is. I've found myself spending money on whole

crowds of peoples' birthday presents when I've known them for about 10

days and I'm struggling over whether to go back to the drawing board

and do a Human Rights Law degree.

Oxford Uni has a 4 week summer course on Human Rights law for a

whopping 4205 pounds - one way of buying myself a career promotion.

I've descended back into the 's e a r c h t h e i n t e r n e t f o r

j o b s' mode which is tedious and a wee bit scary. I guess buying my

way to the top is one way to shorten the pain and maximise the gain!

Media censorship is fascinating though. Bit of trivia for you - Every

country in Latin America has a problem of 'indirect censorship of the

media' through something called government advertising (GA). GA is all

the articles in the media by politicians or by state owned companies.

Every time a paper publishes any GA, they get financial rewards. The

First Gubbs came to Frankfurt.

It was great to have him here. Just what I needed, a really close, old

mate. I showed him around, but best of all we just took pleasure in

the simpler things in life. He cooked fanstatsic Italian things. We

Gubbs is in the Panda Band you see. And the reason he was in town is

that they've just done their first world tour. That makes them

Then i jetted off to London for the weekend to meet up with some more

First i met up with Hamish (look at hamish's site for even more pics)

and got to meet the very funky new lady in his life, Kirrily, and his

fellow brain mechanic mate Marcus.

We met up at some Hip Hop night where Hamish was beginning his MCing

Career. He is having some promo shots taken, complete with mad

cigarette lighter waving effects.

Kirrily kindly offered me her couch to stay on. She lives near this

thing.

I thought that the view from the balcony was a bit armaggedonesque.

An opinion that was only reinforced by the fields of lava we

encountered on the way home that night.

Then we caught up with Skot and Tara, which was made a bit difficult

with Skot being dead and all.

It did give the whole weekend a bit of a Weekend at Bernie's feel

though.

Then we had one of those white walls and designer lighting in a

hallway moments outside of Skot and Tara's new flat.

Skot and Tara's new flat is the coolest ever, because it's in

Gainsboroug Studios where Hitchcock made lots of movies. Bet you don't

have a 6x6 meter rusted steel Alfred head outside your place.

You can tell london is Banksy's town. The shit is everywhere, most of

it god awful imitation. I thought this was quite funny though.

For some reason I don't remember London being as pretty as I

experienced it this time.

We went to Greenwitch, and were awed by all the clocks. And Hamish

invented the telescopic zoom.

Then it was time for me to fly back to the reality of Frankfurt life.

Ancient Board Game Pieces Discovered in Bulgarian Tomb

Yet Another Ancient Tomb Unearthed in Bulgaria's Sozopol

14 August 2007, Tuesday

A team of Bulgarian archaeologists unearthed Tuesday an ancient stone

tomb, dated back to the 4th century BC, Darik News reported.

The team, lead by Krastina Panayotova, stumbled upon the tomb during

the annual archaeological excavations on the Harmani beach of the

Black Sea town of Sozopol.

A man, probably an athlete, had been buried in the tomb because the

team found an object used by athletes in antiquity.

Just a day earlier the archaeologists came upon the grave of another

man, probably a gambler. The grave was full of dice, backgammon pieces

and coins. (Emphasis added).

The team of Krastina Panayotova is working on the Harmani beach of

Sozopol, a site which archaeologist have been exploring for many years

now.

Sozopol is one of the oldest towns on Bulgarian Thrace's Black Sea

coast. The first settlement on the site dates back to the Bronze Age.

I am a study in frustration. A further web search failed to turn up

more details about the discovery of the board game pieces the article

identified as "backgammon" pieces. There are a number of things we do

NOT know from the article, unfortunately, including the exact date of

the discovery. All we can deduce is that it was reported in the

newspaper on August 14, 2007!

We don't know how old the tomb is. Evidently it is quite a large

necropolis that is being excavated, but just because one tomb is dated

"Hellenic" to c. 400 BCE doesn't mean the team of the "gambler" is

from the same era.

We don't know how the archaeologist(s) on site arrived at the

conclusion that the gaming pieces recovered were "backgammon" pieces.

For all we know, they could have been smoothed pebbles used in the

Greek game of Polis, or any other petteia game, as no description of

the pieces was given and no photograph was provided. The fact that

dice - also no description or photograph provided - were found in the

same tomb does not necessarily mean that they were related to the

gaming pieces.

And the reference to coins found in the same tomb is intriguing. Does

this imply that the "gambler" was buried with some of his winnings? Or

perhaps the coins were meant to be a stake for his future games in

Hades/the Afterworld? Or were the "coins" actually tokens from some

other kind of board game? For example, ancient Xiang Qi (Chinese

Chess) pieces have been mistaken for coins because they were circular,

inscribed flat pieces of metal.

All I can do at this point is make a note to check in the future to

Canberra and Catherine de Medici

So much to do and so little time to blog!

Last weekend we went to see our friend Carrie, who since we last saw

her has moved to Canberra and become a famous published author.

We flew to Canberra with Quantas and despite being kept on the runway

for half on hour on the way out, I thought that the flight was pretty

painless. The check in times are really short for domestic flights and

the actual flight itself is only half an hour. By the clever use of

food, Quantas render it seemingly instantaneous. You lift off and put

your seatbelt on. Then they turn the lights off and give you a snack

(biscuits and tea on the way out, dried fruit, nuts and fruit juice on

the way back) and then all of a sudden it's time to put your seat belt

back on to land.

We had a bit of a snooze when we got to the hotel and then Carrie and

Daniel (Carrie's partner) came and met us about 4pm. We then went up

the Telstra tower, which is very similar to the tower in Sydney; it

even has a revolving restaurant! The view is a bit different though,

look at all those trees!

We had tea in the Telstra tower and then went for a drink in the

Phoenix, described by Carrie and Daniel as the only real pub in

Canberra (it was a good deal more real than any of the ones we've been

to in Sydney) and for a Canberra curry.

On Sunday, we got up early, had a fabulous breakfast in the hotel (I

had: a fruit course including whole poached plums, a yoghurt course, a

Bircher muesli course, an English muffin course and cake - pain au

chocolate, danish pastry and American muffin - course) and went for a

look around the parliament buildings.

We then went to the National Art Gallery. We thought it was the

National Portrait Gallery, but it's just as well we went to this one

as it was great. We didn't really have time to look at everything and

we will go back if we visit Canberra again. It had a cool silver ball

thing outside. From the right angle it looks as if it is suspended in

mid-air.

We had lunch with Carrie and Daniel at Sammy's, their local Malaysian

restaurant. I tried a laksa for the first time - I've been meaning to

do this for a while as it seems to be almost the national dish in

Australia. It was very tasty and exactly how I was expecting: very

similar to Thai soups and Malaysian/Thai curry. And then we had to go

home....

On Tuesday night we went for a meal at Coast restaurant in Cockle Bay

Wharf. Cockle Bay Wharf is really just part of Darling Harbour so only

10 mins walk away. I saw the dinner, entitled Catherine de Medici:

Teaching the French on the SMH website as the last event of good food

month (they're big on food here). I recognised the restaurant as being

in The Book, but I hadn't realised it was so close.

I took the camera and once again took zero photos, but I did take a

menu home.

They were very good to me, they replaced my mushroom salad with an

asparagus one and left the truffles off the soup. The food was all

delicious; both of our favourites were the spuntino but the artichoke

and broad beans came a close second for me. The cheese was more to my

taste than Sean's (much like a second dessert course) and the pudding

was not to Sean's taste at all so I got two. Result!

It was really interesting to see all the components of classic French

cuisine that came from Italy, including onion soup, fois gras and duck

a l'orange. She also insisted on separating salty and sweet courses;

apparently everyone else at that time at sweet and savoury food

together, American breakfast style. If you're interested, email me and

Another restaurant success close to our door. It's getting hard to

Merhaba to all -

Because I wasn't able to post for an entire week, I have too many

things to tell you about. So I think I'll give small posts and include

random stories here and there.

Today has been a great day. We didn't catch any hamsters, but we got

fantastic video of one of our males coming out and in of his burrow.

We also successfully located both males with our transmitters. Other

activities for the day: a trip to Kilis for cash (a daily occurrence),

a 3.5 mile run (yes, I RAN - without stopping - for 3.5 miles!),

sorting through owl pellets for rodent skulls, a short game of

soccer/football, and a happy dinner with wine and baklava.

My random story for today will be about our evenings. After dinner, we

usually yawn, look at our watches and say, "Is it really only 6:30??"

When Nuri and the crew were still here, we would gather in one of the

bedrooms, drink wine or beer, and chat while Nuri played the Cumbus

1. While staying at the Shelter (the name of our hostel), a man I did

hand, refused to let me take it with my hand, and forced it into my

mouth). It was great, but we were so full that there was not way we

could eat more than one bite. Sarah couldn't even handle that much.

She made me eat most of hers.

The next night, we went back to the same place for dinner. The food

was really intense, and it made a very powerful impression on my

stomach. I am used to eating Arab food, which is no light fare, and

this still felt incredible heavy. It was also bursting with flavor. As

we ate, the Ethiopians watched and corrected our eating style, and

interrupted us every two or three bites to ask if we liked the food.

It was really fun.

After we had finished eating, the music really started cranking, and

one particularly gregarious man (the one who had forced food into our

mouths the night before) convinced us to get up a dance in the middle

of the restaurant with him and some of the other men. So there we

were, three white folks from the US, dancing in between the tables at

an Ethiopian restaurant to some sort of music that sounded like a mix

between Busta Rhymes, Tribal Beats, and Raffi. (Alright, everything

will be alright, we can make it/ Alright, everything will be alright,

we can make it).

We were there for about 2.5 hours, and we only left because the hostel

had a curfew. When we tried to leave, the other patrons of the

restaurant tried every trick in the book to keep us there. I ended up

arguing with them in the street on our way out, trying to convince

them that we really had to leave, or else we would be locked out of

our hostel.

As we were arguing, one of the men ran into the bar (I knew where he

was going) and came running out with a beer for each of us to walk

back to the hostel with. (This is allowed in Israel). Finally, we were

able to leave . . . But I am sure we will be back, God willing.

3. One morning, Jesse, Som, and I got up early to hike in the Negev.

We took a bus out to the spot where the trail began, but we could not

get a bus back after we were finished with the hike. We decided to

hitch back. As we were walking, we came across a checkpoint that was

manned by Israeli soldiers. They stopped every car heading back to

Eilat, and asked if they would give us a ride. They first promised to

find a car full of beautiful, single girls, but later we convinced

them that we would be happy to ride back with anybody that would give

us a ride.

Jesse and Som got a ride fairly early on, but there were only two

seats, so I waited with the Soldiers for another 45 minutes or so.

They offered me water, coke, sunflower seeds, and cookies. They asked

me what music I liked and tried to give me their Ipod to use, and they

constantly tried to make sure that I was as comfortable as possible.

At one point, a soldier who was stationed a little bit away from the

check point began to sing "Good Morning Beautiful" by Steve Holy,

followed by "You'll Be In My Heart." (The Phil Collins song from

Tarzan). The other soldiers started making requests, and even put in

my request for some Cat Stevens, but apparently, his Ipod was only

stocked with cheesy love songs in English.

My perspective and attitude toward Israeli solders (as people) has

really been impacted by this encounter. It was the first time I have

interacted with soldiers who did not have reason to suspect or be

frustrated with me.

The enduring image of this trip may indeed be dancing in the Ethiopian

restaurant. I know that I will never get that song out of my head, and

I pray that I will be able to return to that place. Israel is quite a

unique place. The blend of cultures, religions, and languages makes it

Of the Year 2004: Fuck It:

Some old dead guy once said that a year is a feast of days that we

should savor one by one. If that's true then somebody already got

to 2004 before Giblets did, probably a large foul-smelling barnyard

animal, and it is now sitting in a steaming pile of crap on

Giblets's front porch.

Giblets was even less satisfied with 2004 than he was by 2003.

Where was Giblets's money! His power! His rap video mansions with

their multitudes of ass-cheek-bearing hos! Instead Giblets saw debt

and stupidity and headaches and annoying people and sickness and

unemployment! Instead of a bountiful harvest of fanciful delights

Giblets was presented with a vertitible smorgasbord of pungent

aromatic mastodon feces!

And Giblets is not alone! What has 2004 done for anyone? Democrats

got to get whupped by Republicans. Republicans got to completely

sell out everything it means to be a Republican. Iraqis got to get

tortured, blown up, and shot at. American troops got to get blown

up, shot at, and stuck in Iraq underpaid. Doves got a war they

didn't like. Hawks got to not like the war. Gays got marriage

rights - in Massachusetts - at least a hundred and thirty six years

late. The religious right got to stomp all over gays and watch Jim

The best Giblets can say is it's over. It was a magnificent and

overwhelming festival of crapulence, but Giblets choked it down in
